This blog is a collection of my articles and opinion pieces. The topics span sexual & gender based violence, child soldiers, food security, public health, eradication of polio & protection of the vulnerable. Having witnessed compelling human tragedies and triumphs, my perspectives have been shaped by my diverse experiences in the Army, the UN, the Red Cross as well as a dad. I genuinely believe that we can together advance peace, humanity and give our children a future full of hope.

I read an article you wrote on need to stand up to violence against women. You used the case of Wendy Kemunto and the two rugby players who, I am happy, are in jail. That was a rather straight forward case. There existed a case in Eldoret Magistrates court in which a father - who is the sole bread winner in his home - was arrested by the local administration after his class 6 or so step daughter complained to neighbours that he was sexually molesting him. Apparently, by that time she had also got pregnant. At the time, in addition to the step daughter, his family consisted of a housewife and his two biological daughters - one in class 6 and the other in class 4 or so. The man was charged but was eventually bought his freedom and was set free. He got a lawyer who bought him his freedom in the corrupt Eldoret magistrates court. While the case was going on when at some point the magistrate noticed she was appearing to be pregnant and asked about it, the prosecutor told her that was not what was in the charge sheet. The girl gave birth, but in order to ensure the man gets his freedom, the child was taken away from her and she was told never to say that she ever gave birth. The girl has since been moved away to live with the maternal grandparents.

Now, this is a serious matter, very serious indeed. However, suppose the court was not corrupt and the man was jailed, what would have happened to his housewife and the two daughters who were at the time in primary school? The family could have starved and the two girls could have dropped out of school. Would justice have been meted to them were their sole bread winner jailed? Of course not. What recourse exists in such a situation - for both the girls and their mother. I don't know of any. So? If a way of helping the housewife and her two girls existed, would it encourage such crimes in poor families? I don't know.

This is one case which I have never know what would have been justice to all the parties. Would you rather waste three people - a housewife and her two daughters or forgo the one girl whose future has already been ruined? How do you rehabilitate this girl whose future has been destroyed? Being a girl, she will become a mother tomorrow. What future holds for her children to be?

Mr. Siddharth, I realize you indeed have a tough in third world countries for certificates here are worthless pieces of paper. The politicians and the educated care only about money, not humanity.

I wish you all the best.
